Border Collie
The Border Collie is highly intelligent,
loyal, honest and a good pet if you understand them. They
do not like being left alone for hours as they are sociable and
enjoy interaction. They require lots of exercise, either
physically or mentally, they are not a couch potato.
Remember this is a working breed that needs to use it's brain.
When you purchase a Border Collie you need
to talk to the Breeder about the type of puppy/adult they
produce as you do not want a strong, pushy type as a pet.
They are better left in the hands of professional Breeders,
Owners, Trainers.
A Breeder will be happy to have completed
all the Kennel Club health schemes that is required for the
breed and if not please do not purchase, look elsewhere.
We should always purchase from Breeders that are protecting the
breed by breeding the best they can, and not exploiting the
breed. A good Breeder is always happy to give after sales
advice and will assist you in any way they can.
You will need lots of time to spend with
your puppy as you will have to socialize and train him. If
you cannot spend time with the puppy then now is not the time to
purchase one and remember they are not toys for the children!
Once you purchase a puppy you have committed yourself to quite a
few years, sometimes as many as 17 or more, you need to consider
all these things.
Remember; you need to teach it to be
obedient and go to a local training club, very enjoyable for
both yourself and puppy. Things you can do with a
Border Collie; obedience, agility, conformation, heelwork to
music, working trials and more. Lots of things for you and
your dog to do and remember that the Kennel Club have a Junior
Scheme for under 18's that children can enjoy too.
