Polish Lowland Sheepdog -
Polski Owczarek Nizziny
The PON was originally bred for herding
and guarding sheep (as it's name suggests). They are an
energetic breed that need lots of time and attention. They are
loyal, kind, loving, protective, bossy and noisy. They are
not a breed that like to be alone for very long, they much
prefer company and they are not shy at verbally telling you so.
They take lots of time on grooming so it
you would like a PON remember that grooming is of major
importance. They have a double-coat and the under coat
does moult out, usually in big clumps like cotton balls.
When purchasing a PON puppy you need to
ask about relevant health schemes and make sure that the parents
have these in place. There are some health issues within
the breed and you need to make sure the Breeder has the Kennel
Club Health Schemes completed.
The PON is not necessarily easy to train,
this does depend on time, effort and will power of the owners.
This is a dominant breed that does need training from
puppy-hood. They are not a breed to purchase on a whim,
you need to do your homework, visit as many PONs in their home
environment as possible and ask as many questions as you can to
satisfy yourself that this is the breed for you.
